Several people asked if it was a Panerai. It is a Soviet Zlatoust combat diver’s watch dating to 1972. Although usually described as a “hard hat” diver’s watch, I am not so sure – Peter from Bremont reckoned that the flat glass would prohibit diving as deep as the depth gauge would suggest but who knows? The NVA Kampschwimmers, used them too…
The movement is removed by unscrewing the top case – there is a rubber O-ring underneath – then the two small screws on the dial. It is a converted pocket watch (caliber 191yC), 15 jewels, mono-metallic balance with screws, Breguet balance spring, brass lever and wheels, average deviation 20C (+/-5C) within +/- 1 minute per day.
The case is
stainless steel with a wonderful canteen crown. Diameter is a whopping 60mm, 80mm with the crown (!), height 15mm, weight 280 gms (over half a lb).
The watch comes on its original two pin strap which is quite flimsy.
The watch is running fine and the balance is good but ATG can not guarantee the watch because of its former use although I have owned one and found it to be a true classic as a vintage ‘objet d’art’
