Well seems like Charlie's been going solo with a trip from here to Sydney earlier this year. This time it's "By Any Means".
Talking ahead of his departure from the Ace Café this morning, Charley Boorman said:
“I cannot wait to get on the road and begin this latest adventure. It’s always nerve-wracking but incredibly exciting as you get closer to the departure date but we’ve been planning for months now and I’m ready to go. It’ll be strange to be out there on my own with only the two camera crew for company but road trips are often the most fun part of any journey and I’ll be driving buses, tuk-tuks, and anything else I can get my hands on so I won’t be short of things to do. Mostly though I’m looking forward to meeting the people behind the cultures and experiencing places that very few westerners ever get to reach.”

So look out for it on BBC2 soon....

Caught the programme last night. Different spin on the Long way concept should be interesting with the various forms of transport. Although the sight of Charlie in his pants skinny dipping was not a good look... very cold..
Ewan must have been busy filming another film but got a small cameo role in this episode. If you missed it catch it on the BBC iplayer.
Charlie could be seen wearing a dark grey dialled version of the ALT1-Z he had before.

...and indeed it did start on Sunday, and some nice shots of his watch! Even got some coverage on TZ-UK, although nobody seems to "get" Bremont over there.
Probably worthy of another Thread, but what is it about Bremont that TZ-Uk don't seem to like?

A. Cost. B. Only a 7750 movement. C. Bland dials.
There may be more.

I know I'm preaching to the converted but...
a. cost - no argument there. Even the new Project Alaska is less than an ALT1-C, and that comes with a horrendous red aluminium shroud.
b. only a 7750. true again, but a lovely looking one:

c. bland dials. I guess it depends on definition of bland... I rather like the simplicity.

Saw the Alaska watch, the red case for temp extremes was very large. |

It was huge. But then, if you're wearing extreme cold weather gear, the ability to press the buttons with gloved fingers is relatively important! Interesting to compare Alaska to the Seiko space watch which was shown at Basel 2008 tho'...
ps not sure what the collective term for Bremonts is - a Broussard of Bremonts perhaps? - but that's a fantastic picture, nonetheless! |

I think the Bremonts are more than just the sum of there parts...and they fill that vintage/new role for me.
Just so we can see what were talking about... here the Alaska.
A Broussard of Bremonts.. you're killing me.. lol

and me....
I think the Alaska Project is BS really.
The dial and handset comes from an early incarnation of the Speedmaster not just that specific incarnation.
The Bremonts are what they are..... I think they are very good and the quality of the case work compared to the relatively ordinary Speedy case is outstanding. No way would I walk to the Pole with a manual wind watch. |

Al Good point. Hadn't spotted that the half-baked Alaska was manual wind. I guess that means I need to find some place out of the extreme cold to remove my gloves (all four pairs of them), then the shroud, then wind the watch - as that function is not available to me when wearing the shroud.
Hmmm... alternatively, I could buy something else...!
Would be interesting to see what extremeties the Bremont boys are looking at now. They mentioned this specifically in the Quarterly Altitude publication:
We are also delighted to have other Bremont wearers out there exposing their watches to g-forces and temperature extremes purely because they can. We know about the g-forces, we know about depth. Wonder who else they have looking at temperature? M |

Hi Gents,
The Bremont fund is still 'taking donations' from myself. Hopefully I'll have it in time before going to Colorado in Jan 09. It's usually around -30 at that time of year in resorts and.... well I never managed to stand still long enough at the top of somewhere like A Basin which is around 12/13 thousand feet to take the temperature but hopefully I can take some photos of frozen gloves and a working watch on my wrist.

I can't decide between the ALT1-P and Z. Just when I make my mind up I see a great pic of the other one and it all begins again....
At least I've stopped myself from quitting early and buying a Fortis or Sinn or even an Oris (I am drawn to the Divers) with the money I already have.

Well I will be stocking Fortis soon as well as bremont, shots are being taken as we speak so it is only gonna get tougher my friend!
I will be shooting a blue ALT1-P in a couple of days and am working through the Fortis range right now, forget Sinn, they are not as good as they were.... They have a couple of very nice pieces but the best ones they don't manufacture many which irritates well me and everyone else. Email me about your Bremont?

Would that be info@atgvintagewatches.com ?
I can't email to the address attached to your profile. I tried to do that a few months ago with a few people without success, it seems to be part of the bug affecting new user profiles. |
