The idea of forums is for people to meet discuss and share ideas about watches, old new, blue, green anything! The site is largely for chronograph enthusiasts, but that does not mean that you cannot post about other types of watches just as long as they are interesting in their own way. Discuss ‘Off topic’ subjects not relating to the watch world and post your pictures too See Forum Guide for advice.

After the Bristol GTG, where I'm sure I wasn't the only one to come away dreaming of other peoples watches and probably hundreds of hours scouring the sales corner, I wondered if we would ever really be happy with our collections.

When I started seriously looking into watches around 5 years ago I had a dream of one good quality piece. Speedmasters, Submariners and their like seemed far, far away and only attainable by god like people with huge disposable incomes, certainly not a lowly mortal such as myself. 6 Speedmasters, a Sub, 6 Seamasters and countless other Omega's and other brands later, why am I still pouring over the SC like a junky desperate for his next fix?

I used to think that the search would be forever upwards, OK I've got a Marcello C, now I'd like a Sub, that kind of thing. Alas I was wrong, I can be just as content with a Seiko 007 as I can with a Sub. So what drives this seemingly eternal quest and will I ever look at my collection, breath a sigh of contentment and think that's it? Has anyone actually reached that point, ever, on this forum?

Cheers,

Gary

P.S. The Friday thread certainly doesn't help I must say .

Speaking as someone who only has 2 watches, I sort of agree with you. Sometimes I'm happy with them- other times I yearn for every watch I see on the internet or on tv in magazines etc.

The chase is probably more important than the kill.  Be careful about achieving ALL your goals and dreams, you might end up like these guys:

If I may be philosophical for a moment - I am not sure that being happy is the point?
The whole point of a "collection" is that it continues to develop, not that it reaches a conclusion. Let's face it, there is no such thing as the "perfect" collection, there will always be some facet that could be changed, inproved, flipped and replaced.

I think the secret is surely to look at everyone elses watches and enjoy the prospect of shuffling/improving/changing the collection in order to afford them, or fit them in.
Better that than feel tortured that the watches aren't already your own.

I know that I have quite a few things that I want to add to the collection, but that's cool, and I am looking forward to tracking a few down, one by one. But I certainly don't feel that I need them all right now.

But I guess you knew this anyway......

Cheers

I agree with Dave - it's enjoyment that's the point of this. It's the good feeling of learning something new, seeing something new. There's enjoyment in a tactile kind of way when you pick up something new. The chopping and changing is fun too - variety is the spice of life (apparently).

I can see myself buying things I'd think are keepers only to let them go. There are watches I'd like to own at some point. And there's a whole load of geeky stuff to learn, and I like it like that.

Some of you guys worry me.   Maybe we need to register some folks as "habitual watch predators", require you to register when moving into a new community, and forbid you to be within 100 feet of an authorized dealership.
