Just seen this and thought it was a good design with obvious military influences. Might just be tempted to get one.

Ok it's a quartz movement but I can forgive it that especially as you can pick them up off the bay for £85 or so inc postage from Hong Kong.

Here's the spec:

  BRAND Seiko       MODEL SNDA57P1
TYPE Military style Analog-display Chronograph wristwatch
FEATURES Stopwatch function - measures up to 12 hours in 1/20 second increments
GLASS Scratch resistant hardlex crystal     CROWN Crown at 3 o'clock
CASE Solid Stainless-steel with Matte finishing   BUTTONS Two buttons for Stopwatch function
       - Thickness ~11mm     CALENDAR Date at 4 o'clock position
       - Diameter ~45mm incl. crown     WEIGHT ~68g
DIAL Charcoal Dial face with 12-hour numerals   3 SUB DIALS Stopwatch 1/20-second hand on top
       - Luminous hands & markers          - Small Orange sec. hand (time) on left
       - Stopwatch Orange minute hand        - Stopwatch min. & hr. hands on bottom
CASEBACK Stainless steel back cover      WATER RESISTANT 100 Meter
BAND Double thickness Mens-standard length Black Nylon strap with Seiko Stainless steel buckle
       - With leather reinforcement for strap holes
MOVEMENT Caliber 7T92, Quartz   BATTERY LIFE Approx. 3 years on SR927SW
MANUAL Included       BOX Optional at £4.00
CONDITION Guarantee Brand New and 100% Authentic   WARRANTY One Year

And a nicked few pics, 2 promo and 2 real world.

Could be a very good beater with a bit of style, any opinions out there?

Cheers,

Gary

So one of these...

and one of these

or one of these

for £85

Se we are getting to the crux of why Seiko irritate me....

They have come up with really good watches themselves but can't help ripping off other brands so blatantly!

here are a few of their own good ones...not rip offs!

So you won't be getting one then Al?

As ever I see your point but then all watches, especially military style ones, have been strongly influenced by previous designs. A quick look through your military watch book confirms that. I admire the fact that Seiko and others can make good, if not entirely original, designs with excellent build quality affordable to the man on the street.

At least they're not direct rip-offs like the Alpha's of this world, merely taking good elements from other designs and amalgimating them into a cohesive design. If nothing else it certainly makes you realise how much profit margin there is in the established Swiss watch industry.

I suspect we're going to have to agree to disagree on this one Al.

Cheers,

Gary

I like it- most will probably disagree but I think it looks a bit Bremont-esque albeit it costs a tiny % of the price of a Bremont, a nice all round watch for those on a budget.

I do agree about the value of making a watch for the man in the street, I think the likes of Seiko, Pulsar, Citizen, etc do a Stirling job... and of course design is an amalgamation of ideas influenced from previously executed products. They just seem to copy other peoples designs too easily. Of course that watch will not impact on the sales of IWC or Fortis but Seiko 'are' a brand and they have a rich history pre 1970. Their Sishoka watches made for the Japanese military are some of the most sort after military watches.

But this is a rip off from the JLC and IWC type 11 - they could use different hands but they deliberately use the hands used by those watches.

And what they do is not exactly new - here is a vintage alarm watch that is obviously ripped from a JLC Memovox

Here is a shot of one of their military watches from WWII you don't see them re making this one... why not?

Coz it is easy to make cheap versions of other watches.

I always liked the one featured in E-Bay auction 330262157352 (no connection to me)
Titanium, so strong, 200m rated, and an alarm as well.
Same blasted finish but with added crown guards.
As a cheap beater, what is not to like (other than the fact the chrono is not 12-hr)?
There are less of these about, but they used to go for £50 or so.

The one above looks good, but a bit wrong. None of the hands reach the minute indices, which always annoys me, and there is a gap between the outer edge of the printing on the dial, and the inner edge of the indices on the chapter ring, almost as if the dial was intended for a smaller-diameter watch.

The general concept (cheap waterproof Seiko-quality quartz beater that can be picked up and put down at will), is great.
But this one isn't quite the one for me.

Sorry, just my "ho"

I agree about the hands Dave, that's the one feature that's really putting me off if I'm honest. For the money though I might overlook them.

You building up your cheap 'go to' part of your collection again Gary?

Out with the Dunhills and in with the Seikos.....Lol!

Don't tell me you are getting 'the fever' coz you haven't bought a watch in a while?

Not really mate, I probably won't buy the Seiko, just thought it was interesting and might start bit of a debate.

I do confess to being a bit twitchy having not bought anything in a while though. I almost succumbed to one of Eddies PRS-5's the other day but deep down I knew I'd probably just flip it on pretty quickly. Still looking for a good L5100 Speedmaster like Dave's and maybe even another dive watch, not too sure which yet though. Sold a few things to try and build up a war chest too but the car and house are doing their best to clean that out at the mo, oh well.

Cheers,

Gary

I'd have a MM300m in a flash. And even be tempted by the Prospex 1000m. But seems ludicrous to spend so much on a Seiko. Shame...
M

And that 4s15 SUS Mil is cool too...

And Al, if you like the coined bezel, they used to do a 7s26 ANA Pilot which was nice.

Personally, I like it..  In fact, if Seiko did that dial / hands set with a diver bezel, I'd probably have to hunt one down.

BTW, I don't think of it as a rip off; that's like trying to argue that Omega's SM300 ripped off the Rolex Sub - or is it more correct to say Rolex ripped off Blancpain?  Or the Longines Weems?  I mean, how many ways are there to do an external bezel diver or a 3 dial chronograph?  Similarities yes, but I think the Seiko is its own watch, and doesn't take anything away from the IWC, Fortis, or whatever.

So who actually has these Seikos for sale?  I cruised around on the Seiko / Citizien sites I knew about, but never saw one.

I saw one of these (blasted, not black) in the flesh in a shop whilst I was on holiday, at £112 (sale price). I'm sorry this doesn't help you but it surprised me, because it was the type of shop that would only discount items that had been hanging around for a while and I thought this was a relatively new model.

It was quite pleasingly military-tool-functional-looking, but I thought the crown look disappointingly weedy on it.

And the hands still annoy me.
