Collectors of Replica/Fake watches.

I guy I know, a friend collects, buys and sells watches.

I doesn’t do it for a living but as a hobby, Panerai, Omega, Iwc, etc…

Like me perhaps?

Well not really as my watches are vintage and restored to the best possible condition, I don’t sell new watches but then neither does he….

Panerai 'Fakes' Group shot!

All of the watches he buys and sells on Ebay are replica watches.

That’s right, not the real thing but watches that are made to look like their more real cousins and they really do look like them. These are not necessarily fakes sold to Online Tourists as one my get collared on the streets of New York, Hong Kong or Bangkok by a man with a briefcase offering you a $30 Rolex Submariner but to people who know what they are and although they would like to own a Panerai Arctis or an IWC Aquatimer or even an IWC Portuguese but they can’t either afford one or can not commit the money to buying one…

Speedmaster Moonphase Pam Submersible Breitling Navitimer
Omega Seamaster Pam Luminor Planet Ocean
This is an ‘under’ class of collector!

They don’t really want the real thing, because to by a real one would mean they could only have one ‘real’ watch when what they actually want is a ‘collection’, see..?

A collection of watches, 20 or 30 watches that they can rotate, wearing a Panerai Luminor Submersible one day or an Omega Speedmaster Moon Phase the next.

His wife asked me to get him a collectors box to keep his watches in……
He has spare straps and bracelets for these watches which are also ‘Replica’, deployment buckles dive straps correct in design for the various models he owns but on inspection  I can tell that the quality isn’t right.

But he doesn’t care!

He has his collection and that is all that matters.

He first spoke to me about wanting a Breitling Navitimer a few years ago….

I mentioned that I could get one for him but he would have to wait!

This is not a poor man but neither is he wealthy enough to drop £3,000 on a watch without a great deal of thought. Instead of waiting he saw a replica on Ebay and bought that instead.

Now I have seen these watches, they have ‘glass’ not mineral or sapphire crystals so when you look side on the crystal is a greeny blue like the bottom of a milk bottle, their bezels do not ratchet, the chrono functions do not operate properly if at all but from 6 feet away they look real and that ‘he discovered’ was all he wanted.

He bought a couple of Storm watches, limited edition big case quartz designer watches sold in the . He said he would keep them as the were limited and would be a good investment. An investment from a $200 new watch?

Fake Panerai Arktos

He recently sold part of his collection for about £1,000 on Ebay to people who knew they were not real but paid good money for them anyway. He is part of a whole group of people that buy and sell these watches to each other on Ebay.

I told him that the £1,000 he made I could help him buy a Navitimer with it…. A real one.

Real Breitling Navitimer 806 1966

But no, he has already bought some copies of other tempting watches and plans to keep hold of them and make a small return on each sale.

So he is happy with his lot, happy with his watch box which when you open it is full of fake Omega Planet Oceans, Panerai Luminor Daylight Chronosgraphs, Panerai Submersibles and IWC!!!!!

Even though his watches are not real he does not care and is very happy with his hobby.

Is he hurting anyone? Well no, they all know what they are buying and are happy to part with their money. But if he selss to someone who is under the impression they are real then that is another thing. I suspect something like that will happen soon and that will be the end of his hobby on Ebay.

Who am I to pass judgement on this behaviour?

Would I get in to this world? Absolutely not!!!

Does it bother me? Well yes it does! I don't like it... but what can I do, he is a friend and in the real world a stand up guy!

I saw someone post a question about wanting to buy a fake to try out before he bought the real thing. He asked a forum of collectors if they had one top sell. The reaction was horror from the group! But why not ask? Personally I wouldn't have anything to do with them at all.

I guess the answer is the same the world over and it has always been so….

If you can’t afford it then don’t bother!

Regards

Alistair

I'm sorry Alistair, but I'm going to be captain negative!

To be honest I really cannot see the point! Sure he enjoys his 'collection' but what has he really got? A load of illegal copies - and interlectual property theft is clearly illegal.

I have other hobbies aside from collecting watches which are also littered with fakes. I'd argue, from experience, that selling these copies on is irrisponsible as the buyer can then do as they please with the fake, in some cases attempt to pass it off as a genuine item to an inexperienced collector who may be put off watch collecting for good as a result!

I don't have the cash to buy every watch I want, but thats life. What kind or life would it be to never covet something, never save up for something extra special, but never have the joy of owning the real thing! I'd love a Ferrari, but wouldn't be seen dead in one of the MR2 kitcar copies - just like these watches it would be a case of 'all show, no go'.

Fake watches to me are simply bought to impress people who know no better - and frankly I'd sooner not go down that road.

Apologies again for the negativity.

No Problem!

Go ahead, maybe he will read this and see the error of his ways!

i have been telling him for some time that it is not the best thing he could be doing but he is a grown man.

But there are a lot of them and they are tolerated on Ebay because no body seems to care!

I just thought I would write a blog piece about it and see what people thought. Post away!

Apart from the lightly wierd premis that something is special because it kind-of looks like something much better, the unhealthy thing about this type of activity (and its apparently common nature) is that the more it goes on, the more tolerated it becomes. The more this happens, the more likely the occurence of major scams of people who may not know better.
But what do you do?
There are plenty of people out there in the fora who report to E-Bay every fake they see (I am not that conscientious), but universally they report that 9 times out of 10, nothing happens as a result. So it goes on.
The strange thing is that there are plenty of well-made vintage watches out there that go for even less money than these replicas. That's the bit I can't figure.

Very true!

I reported a Heuer watch to Ebay that was an out and out fake on Monday. It was such a fake that it wasn't even discussed when i posted it at OnTheDash which is the Heuer Discussion forum. The watch went for £640 and when i tried to email the winning bidder to let them know it was a dog. Ebay stopped me.

So you are right Dave, they are legitimising this behaviour which is awful!

Alistair,

Fakes are fakes and should not be tolerated ... It sends a very bad message and in the end someone always gets burned.

However, history shows us that if a dollar can be made by making a copy of something expensive then it will be copied - whether it be art, watches, jewelry, cars or even money itself - we will never stop the forgeries.

I am just happy to have a little bit of knowledge, and more importantly, access to those that have much more, in order to weed through the crap.

Keep reporting and posting the fakes,

Scott

I'll try Scott, this article is written in as much of a guide to this kind of stuff to show how endemic it is...
You also get to see what is actually faked.

Hope it helped?

Legitimising crime if you ask me. Where does the money go for these watches? Drugs money, funding organised crime?

Just my two pence worth...

I couldn't agree more but it should be pondered. i also discovered that the guy in question was recently 'binned' off Ebay so he is lucky that is all that happened.

Cheers!

Can anyone say... Cheese Wiz?

Live and let live baby... but if you are cheese, you are cheese, Chester! I'd rather have a real Timex than a fake anything. But that's just me, and that's all I worry about. :)

Have you ever realized that when you buy readymade suits you get a choice of only a few colors & styles, also finding the perfect fit are quite difficult? Wouldn’t it be better to choose from over 2000 different British & Italian fabrics and get a tailor made suit at a similar price that you pay for readymade suits?

We are a company based in Hong Kong and have been providing custom made suits & shirts since 1997. With representatives in major cities around the globe we can arrange to show you the fabric samples and take your measurements, or you can also place your orders online with the help of our measuring guide. There are over 2000 fabrics to choose from along with all the latest styles.

All our suits and shirts are produced by highly skilled Shanghainese tailors in Hong Kong and delivered in about 4 weeks, express delivery can be made in 2 weeks at a minor extra cost. In case you are not able to find what you are looking for then please let us know your requirement may it be in words or by a photograph and we could arrange it for you.

We also have an outlet at the Hotel Intercontinental Budapest where you are most welcome to visit us. Though we are not located in streets like Savile Row (London), we have still been able to offer made to measure suits to many VIP’s from around the world.
