This is a funny business.

I have always loved watches, and I was drawn to vintage because of their history, ageless quality and beauty.

In the late 80’s the watch business was just not trying very hard to produce any very cool watches. By the late 90’s some old Brand names had been revitalised and the new watch scene was becoming interesting. I started my original site in early 2002 and from then I have moved on to be a ‘small ball – really small’ player in the online vintage market.

Last year I started speaking to some ‘new manufacturers’ that I thought were doing interesting work. Two of them appreciated the online world and showed respect for what was happening here, one being Linde Werdelin who I now represent, the other is Bremont Watches whom I hope to represent.

Earlier this week I met a guy called Nick English in a coffee bar in ’s Picadilly. We talked for just over an hour about what I was doing and what his fledgling company started by him and his brother were up to… I made my pitch and he liked the idea and we arranged for a little more talk so as to flesh out an agreement.

When we left, he to a meeting with one of Bremonts newly selected retailers and me to catch a train I can’t help thinking that I was walking away more enriched for the encounter. That is of course because in my briefcase I was carrying two of their show model watches. One of them being the version that is due to be shipped off to the US Navy Test Pilot School where it will be offered as a passing out gift.

See here: http://www.usntps.navy.mil/index.htm

Yes, a guy I met for only an hour and previously had a couple of telephone conversations with gave me two of his recently delivered babies. Now that ladies and gentlemen is balls!

Ball park RRP in the UK will be between £1,900 and £2,950 with a Secret Special edition £4,000 version coming out later in the year. I will let you know about that one.

All chronometres.

US will be less 17.5% UK tax.

Enjoy!

Regards

Alistair

And here they are……. The Bremont models Alt1-Z and Alt1-P.

This is the watch destined for the US Navy fighter school, it has their logo and the bonus of a GMT hand.

Bremont model Alt1-Z

See shot of the enamel top screw in crown, set so it finishes its position with the blades of the propeller horizontal. Neat!

The extra crown on this side sets the internal bezel that has a slight friction ratchet.

The movement is a 7750 that will be detailed with some beautiful engine turning and of course the excellent detailing of the cut outs of the rotor weight give a nod to aircraft engines.

The saphire crystal is double AR coated as you can see with the 'oil on water' refraction.
Strap is grey calf, bull cut with brushed butterfly deployment.

Below is the Bremont model Alt1-P

See the sunken push pin pusher for the date change in the side of the toughened PVD finish case.

Again a great shot of the component fit case. Shouldered pushers and mix of case finishes.

The internal bezel shot here shows just how deep the dial is...

I don't normally do 'wrist shots' but I have worn this all day and wanted to show the size. Think IWC Fliegger but nicer.

This watch comes on a Kevlar finshed strap

And finally a 'chocolate box shot to show how pretty it is against the sky.

These watches I believe are outstanding the dial seemed busy to me but like all complicated watches it takes time to adjust and the clarity of read is just great.

The process that goes in to making these watches, the case hardening, the various component finishes,  the dials, the straps, the movement decoration and chronometre certification shows that these guys mean business.

Hell i want one, I haven't gone through the full specs of the watches as it is done much better on their website which is here:

http://www.bremont.com/index2.html

I would seriously like some feedback on what people think, we may have a deal but I would appreciate some comment please??

By the way here is Orlando Bloom wearing a cream dial version (ALT1-C)

Excellent...    By TylerEOT on 24/05/2007 22:56
Nice design, classic, yet distinctive. That is difficult to do. Readable, informative, and looks well made.

Lovely watches, like the look of the case espacially the 2 different metals/finishes around the middle. Think the dials are fractionally over fussy. Just a little too much visual noise. Overall though loving the Alt1-P

Fantastic    By DaveS on 25/05/2007 10:32
Good news, and a fantastic looking range of watches. I do agree with some of the dial comments, and have one further point. I think that white hands (on the Alti-P) look so much more classy than the chromed ones on the USN TPS version. Another detail I love is the hook-back on the ends of the lugs, viewed from the side. Pure engineering sculpture.

I like the styling of the Bremont watches. My three favorite lines within the collection are the Alt1-C, BC-S1, and BC-F1.

I really like the ALT1-C because of that classic bicompax layout. It appears to be very readable and they seem very well done. I also like the modifications to the rotor and the decorations to the movement.

The one thing that really stands out on the BC watches is the day/date layout. I like it a lot. I like it because it is do different from everything else out there. I would totally buy one from that line.

I think Bremont has a very attractive product.

looks like they have very clearly laid out dial which these days is becoming an unusual feature!

Nice to see a movement on show!

However a word of caution, they need to do something to survive in an increasingly competitive market.

I think these are marvelous...    By BrandonS on 25/05/2007 15:56
... a very "traditional" dial design yet not co-opted from other watches. The cases are wonderfully unique yet not derived from others. Love the hardened-steel factor.

Now, I'd LOVE to see the non-chronos at 43mm as well!! :)
Great pics, Alistair!!

A lot better in the metal    By Agent Orange on 26/05/2007 12:57
When Alistair first told me he was approaching Bremont the first thing I did when I got home was go straight to their site to find out more. I have to say I was felt bit deflated, the only design that got me vaguely excited was the cream face, two subdial model ALT1-C. So when Al rang to say he had a couple to photograph and did I fancy a butchers, of course I couldn't say no but I was prepared to be disappointed.

I was pleasantly surprised, in the metal they are a lot better, my favourite of the two being the ALT1-P. The first thing that got my attention is the subdails, they are sunken and gloss which makes a lovely contrast to the matt dial, something that even Alistair's great photography hasn't quite captured. Then you notice the distingtive three piece case design and those lugs attached to the bezel, lovely design feature that. The size is also quite surprising but despite my skinny wrists it felt comfortable and not too large. The strap is, if anything, over engineered. I don't mean that as a negative, the kevlar and leather combination gives the impression that it just won't wear out. I don't think Bremont will be making much revenue out of strap sales put it that way.

The negatives - The dial IMHO is too cluttered which impairs legibility slightly, however it's very easy to improve. Removing the chronometer text from the 6 subdail and shortening the minute marks on the internal bezel would fix it. I have to say I thought the white hour and minute hands looked a bit cheap, simple because they stand out too much, if they were the same cream colour as the hour markers it would improve matters. Cosmetically that's it really. The only other potential sticking point is the price. At nearly £3K for the ALT1-P model Bremont will have a lot of very stiff competition amongst well established names. I'm not sure the Englishness of the brand and the tougher case technology will be enough of a USP to lure customers away from the likes of Rolex, Omega and IWC to name a few. Having said that I realy hope it is and they do because this endeavour really deserves to succeed.

So all the best to Bremont, I salute your decision to make a distinctive range of watches and likewise to Alistair for stocking them.

I've attached a very quick photoshed rendition of a simpler dial design. The differences are subtle but are a big improvement IMHO. Not sure if it'll preview, if not I'll email it to Al who might display it.

Posting code!    By ATG on 26/05/2007 13:07
This is the best piece of code for posting on forums I have found. Works every time. I will paste it into the forum guide. All letters must not have spaces in between and you will have to copy it as you can't cut and paste.

Good work on the dial. Food for thought.

Alistair

From the site, like the look of the ALT1c and would think about buying one, agree the cream dial with dark sub-dials is the one; the 2 sub-dials seem to work best, others a little busy as stated by others. If they put as much effort into the timepieces as the website, they'll be quality.

Can somebody suggest me a better online shopping website    By Mark Lewis on 09/01/2008 11:05
Hi everybody,

Can somebody suggest me a better online shopping website where I can purchase the high quality, name brand watches at reasonable prices. However, I searched the web and find the resources i.e.

http://www.topestore.com
http://www.latest-beauty-tips.com
http://www.safeshoppe.com

where the prices are comparatively low.
Please suggest if you have some other better resources.
