This year while developing my site I had a yearning to own a truly modern technical watch so I bought an Omega Speedmaster x - 33. Well it was very cool looking and was certainly interesting but several things annoyed me about it...
- It was Titanium and while being a 'big' watch + 42 mm, it did not weigh anything as the movement was a quartz Hybrid. Now anyone who has owned a 'big' watch knows that if it is light it tends to allow you to swing your arm around without any respect for what you are wearing, hence I kept whacking it and Titanium 'does' scratch quite easily. (note: There are guys selling titanium touch-up pens on Ebay that work quite well apparently).
- It really wasn't that technical. Being a chrono, it had all the elapsed time recording features of a chronograph with some other stuff, like count down, split second timing, a very loud alarm and way point/lap times for separate timings of other objects. It did some other stuff but I just wasn't interested enough in it to be bothered. It was too intent on showing you it could be both analogue and digital and the whole 'Indiglo' light up dial thing just made me feel it was cheap and fluffy!
Any how it got me thinking that although I am vintage obsessed i am also a fairly modern man and enjoy cutting edge technology. This has led me to seek out these guys, Linde Werdelin, who were first brought to my attention by Stefan (S.L.) from one of the watch forums EOT/Dive. (I have used his pics below, i hope he won't mind?)
They have produced a 300 meter/ 1000 feet, Dive Watch that can have a very clever removable 'technical' module fitted on top of the watch. The digital display shows great stuff like, barometer, wind speed, temperature, etc. Initially it seems they are aiming at skiers and general mountain people although as the module can be updated via their website in the future I assume a 'deep dive' computer and other technical stuff could be on the way. I think it is a cool product!!
Any way I spoke to them and as they are based in London i will be going to see them for a chat. i will keep you posted and meanwhile have a look at the pics/spec and their site which has some great info and is very stylish.
Regards
Alistair

Hi Alistair,
I have found interesting watches (this one too, I believe) on Wristwatchreview.com. Gift it a look, if you haven't already. |

A wicked watch, I loved mine but seeing as I can't seem to keep many of my watches for more than a week....let's just say she went to a very good home :-) Only a couple of niggles, the bezel is aluminium so quite light to touch and the deployant clasp occassionaly digs into your wrist as it isn't a butterfly. Other than that superb!
